What is multi-factor authentication?

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is a security feature that adds an extra layer of protection to your online accounts. Instead of relying only on a password, MFA requires two or more ways to confirm it’s really you. For example, after entering your password, you might be asked to enter a one-time code sent to your phone or generated in an authentication app.

If your information is out there, setting up multi-factor authentication on your important accounts (like email, banking, superannuation and social media) can make it much harder for someone else to access them. Even if someone knows your password, they won’t be able to log in without the second verification step.
